Training is a fun time
for a cockatiel but sometimes harder on the owner, just have lots of
patience. A younger bird is easier to train, older ones can also be tamed
and trained but it takes a lot more time and patience, usually they are not
as friendly as a young bird. When teaching them to talk which they are not
known to be the best talkers, the word should be very simple and repeated
over and over. Two cockatiels together are impossible to train for they are
more interested in each other. A tape recorder works wonders when it is
played over and over.
When teaching a cockatiel to talk, set special times every day to talk to them and also they like music. They seem to mimic things like like sirens, whistling and I found out "Shelby" my cockatiel renamed himself "Shell-Bird". Cockatiels love to play games. They are not the easiest to teach to do tricks, but they do have enough antics of their own to make them look special.
I have found cockatiels to be quite intelligent. I've heard of many that are able to sing an entire song word for word knowing some that have personality can whistle entire songs. My bird "Shelby" whistles to "Mocking Bird Hill," would you believe that with him being a cockatiel. He also woke you up whistling "The Army Wake Call." There are just so many things that you can teach them as long as you have patience! |
